As for individual states, I think it is a matter of rolling
the dice.

As for miles, pounds, gallons, inches... we can blame the
British.  As for *why* we continue with it when the Brits
have changed, we can blame only ourselves.  When I was a
kid in grade school in the 1960s (yes, before the dawn of
time), we were taught that the US was going to become metric,
so we had to learn it.  They are still teaching that same
lesson. :)  Or not -- do a Google search on Mars Climate
Orbiter. :(
