[V6-12v] Climate Control Problem

95 A6 intermittent malfunction (pushing buttons on the climate control head unit) do nothing. Won't cycle up or down, or change mode. After a while it might work fine. Unit otherwise is okay.
Remove and clean contacts? Internal problem? I'm hoping a little cleaning around the plug and contacts will do it. Is this a job for stabilant?
Any advice appreciated.
