Calvyn,

I don't know about your A4, but on my 1994 90S, you don't need to 
replace the entire shaft to replace the CV joints. The outer joints 
are replaceable. The inner joints are part of the shaft assembly.

I changed the front, outer joints on my 90 about two years ago. It 
was pretty painless. You don't need to get the strut tower off. I got 
CV joint kits from The Parts Connection and went to work. I recall 
typing up a procedure for the joint replacement and sending it to the 
list so it should be in the archives somewhere. Run a search by 
author and you'll find it. The procedure is also well documented in 
the Bentley manual.
