[V6-12v] Outside air thermometer reading E

Folks,
I replaced the heater core in my 1994 90S this weekend. Man, what a
royal pain in the a**. But now it's done.
Everything works except for the outside air thermometer which now
reads E. Here's how it works: I start the car, nothing is shown in the
thermometer display. No backlight. After about a minute or two, it
"wakes up", turns on the backlight, and displays the letter E. Any
idea why?
The obvious next step is to check the wiring and the sensor (which is
located by the left fog light behind the grille). Does anyone know how
to get that grille out? Do you have to get the fog light out first or
is there a trick?
At least the thermometer is not mission critical. The car drives great
and all the instruments, cruise control, column switches, etc. work.
Thanks,
Tom
