Actually, I did replace the heater core last spring. It was leaking
from the top and not into the heater box so I didn't get any steam on
the window. But you're right. Coolant is a bitch to get out of
anything. When the heater core in the Camaro I used to drive blew I
spent hours with hot water and a shopvac trying to get the coolant out
of the carpet. No matter what I did there was still an annoying greasy
residue left in the carpet.

But in case of my Audi, the rear window is actually the worst
affected. So I think I can rule out coolant as the root cause in my
case.
