[V6-12v] How to get rid of that annoying sheen on the inside of windows

David,
You may be confusing coolant (antifreeze) with R134 (the A/C
refrigerant). My A/C works fine.
Telltale signs of a blown heater core: Curry soup smell when the heat
is turned on. Often the windshield will steam up when you use the
defroster.
I don't know what the telltale signs of a blown evaporator would be
other than the A/C wouldn't be able to hold a charge. But the
evaporator is supposed to be a weak spot on the B4 bodies. If you are
changing the evaporator anyway, it definitely makes sense to change
the heater core ($25 part). Evaporators are bloody expensive
($400-ish).
