[V6-12v] Timing Belt Tensioner Torque Setting

Thanks Tom,

I think I solved the mystery overnight while looking through the various
manuals again.

These engines either came with an 8mm, or 10mm bolt to hold the tensioner.
The tension for an M8 car would be 22Nm, the tension for an M10 car would be
43Nm (unless Audi A4, which specifies 45Nm).

The confusion arises because BOTH the 8mm and 10mm bolts have an 8mm bolt
head! This is why we thought we had an 8mm bolt, whereas on my car (and
indeed most models, according to the parts catalogue) it is actually a 10mm
bolt which requires an 8mm allen key bit.

There is more confusion, because the manual for the 80/100 calls for 30Nm,
and than a 70Nm final stage tightening for the camshaft sprockets, while the
A4 procedure specifies 30Nm plus a half-turn. In practice though, these
probably provide similar torques, but I tend to prefer angle tightening for
critical bolts as in theory it should be more accurate.

Congratulations to Audi for making everyone's life easier as usual! :)

Cheers,

James
