[V6-12v] Quattro Conversion?

Mike, Brian,

Any particular reasons why? Evidently the ‘easiest’ way would be to buy a
Quattro, but I know my car is basically sound, and I’ve just spent a lot of
time and money making the engine good. Would it be easier, in fact, to find
a Quattro with a blown engine but everything else good and just transplant
my engine into it? As far as I’m aware, the 12v engine was exactly the same
(AAH engine) in the Q and non Q 80s of that era

I take your point though, I was just trying to find out how deep the
differences were, or if it was simply a case of exchanging a few components,
albeit some major ones. I think if a Q conversion would be total madness,
I’d probably try to find a clean S2 and keep my 80 as a second car. I’ve had
a look round though, and it seems hard to find an S2 that hasn’t been messed
around with by grown up boy racers. It seems even no service history cars
are fetching silly prices for high mileage models. S4s look like better
value, but I really like the old S2 shape better than the S4 type. Ah well,
I’ll keep a look out and see what’s around!

On the subject of my 80, is there a way to upgrade the suspension to the
‘Sports’ option that I know Audi offered? Anyone know what the differences
were there?

Any further thoughts, or input welcome.

Cheers,

James

it would be insane to do that to your or any other car, just sell it and get
a real one. youd be better off finding a crashed q car and putting your body
panels on it.

Well, the head gasket job (actually an 'engine-out and rebuild the top end
and do a clutch job) is finished. She's running very smooth and powerful so
definitely time and money well spent!

While I was working on my car at my mechanic's garage, he had a nice S2 in,
and this brought up the fact that my 80 was lovely, but could use a bit of
4WD to really make her handle better. My mechanic, who specializes in
performance cars (rally and old F1 restorations, etc) suggested finding a
'donor' A80Q of the same generation (B4 UK spec. 1991-95) and literally
'transplanting' in the gearbox, driveshaft, diffs, and anything that's
different.

I'm up for the idea, but we couldn't see where the fuel tank might go on my
car, since it has a spare wheel well in the boot that is actually part of
the bottom rear chassis. Without actually seeing an 80Q of that generation
we don't know how the fuel tank and rear diff/ axles attach, etc.

Any ideas, or anyone with an 80Q that has pictures of the underbelly?

Cheers,
James
