It's of no use re-torquing the heads when you've been driving around for a while after doing the valley pan gasket job. You must re-torque the head bolts a 1/4 turn every time you remove the intake manifold, or you'll get cylinder head gasket leaks. You can re-torque the bolts twice (1/4 turn x 2) before you must renew the bolts.

There is a procedure in an Audi tech bulletin that allows replacement of the bolts one at a time in between doing head gasket replacement to allow further turns, etc. which I'll try to look up. However, if they're already leaking the only cure is to replace the head gaskets.

Head bolts were originally a male poly (from memory) but were gradually replaced with female poly heads. I bought an Audi tool to do mine and found it fit the new bolts, but had to buy a different tool to remove the old ones. It's one of those things where you have to look on your car and see - depends on the year and whether it's had new head gaskets before. New bolts should be of the later design.
