[V6-12v] Starter motor

Clive,

The upper one if I remember correctly is just one of the bolts holding the
tranny to the engine. Its 19mm if I remember correctly, well its either 19,
or its 17. It shouldn't be that difficult to get with a ratchet, 6" ext and
deep well 19. I believe that's how I got mine out last time. However, it
might be on there pretty tight so, you might need something longer than your
standard 12" long ratchet. A 2' breaker bar or a small length of pipe to
fit over your ratchet should give you the leverage you need to break it
lose.

Course once you have it loose, its still a pain in the arse to get it out of
the car, but if you move it around a lot, you can get it out.

Good luck!

Rob

okay i surrender .....
I see the problem is the braided line from the starter relay to the starter
is completely coroded and gone. easy right . well 60 minutes to remove the
belt, alternator, and lower starter motor bolt.
90 minutes after that even and I can't even SEE the upper one. I refuse to
believe I have to take the engine mount out to do this. I can see it in
there with a mirror but that is all. I have gone in with extensions and
guessing different sizes but I am still no where. What am I missing ? I have
even removed the dipstick. It feels like it should be about a 12 or 13mm but
I just can't get an angle on it

help .. !!!

Clive,

The starter is always grounded. The fat wire is battery plus. The
skinny wire controls the solenoid (which controls a pair of contacts
connecting the fat wire to the starter motor and throws the pinion
gear into the flywheel). If you connect the terminal for the skinny
wire with the terminal for the fat wire, the starter should run. Make
sure the car is in neutral before you mess with this.

If you decide to do it on the workbench, make sure to clamp down the
starter securely before hooking up power to it. The torque of the
motor will cause the starter to move and you don't really want it
falling on your toes.

You can usually take the starter apart. You can take the front of it
off to get access to the fork controlling the pinion gear. That could
give you some clues as to why the starter won't work.
