These are all good posts. I would like to make some additional statements:
1) The drilling procedure is just in reference to lock cylinder
replacement, not electrical switch replacement. Two separate, but related
repairs. (restating, I know)
2) The steering wheel and stupid airbag removal procedure do NOT have to
be done to replace the ignition switch on either the 90 or the A6/100.
With very careful manipulation of the instrument cluster, it will come out
around the wheel. Nice. Huge time saver.
3) Unhook the battery before you begin. Sometimes this procedure will
throw a hard airbag code if you do not. This requires either a trip to the
dealer or VAG-COM or equiv. to clear. I have not figured out the pattern
of why it sometimes does and sometime does not throw the hard code. Must
be something to do with the small variations in the sequence of contacts
being made or unmade when the switch is unplugged and replugged, as
battery power is obviously present in that switch.
4) The new switch gives the car a fresh new-car feel, as the spring that
returns the key from 'start' to 'run' is in the ignition switch, not the
lock. Small pleasure.
