OK Keith. I thought you (or Bruce) would tell me EXACTLY what I need to
know. Bless you both for turning your passion into a business!
I would like to purchase this transmission you have ,rebuilt or not.
E-mail me off list and Let's make a deal!
MIKE B.
The best all round choice would be the V8's 5 spd for four reasons...
Common Type44 shift linkage and mounting.
Larger input shaft
Larger pinion shaft
Same gear ratio as the rear diff.
The cooling system shouldn't be an issue. IMO it was intended to prevent
gear overheating on those long autobahn cruises, especially in the area
of the center diff which just happens to be where the return line dumps.
The problem with the S-car tranny is the shift linkage and mounting.
You'd have to find a donor quattro 5 spd 100/Scar to cut the mounting
from and hope it can be adapted to the V8's tranny tunnel.
The Type 44 turbo tranny (20v excepted) has the problem of having the
wrong final drive. Same with all the 12v V6 100 tranny's. Type 44 N/A
tranny has the correct final drive but none of the advantages of the V8
tranny plus it has a locking center diff instead of a torsen so you'd
have to figure out how to control the locking mechanism.
Best (common) donor car would be an 89-91 100/200 quattro.... correct
linkage, correct pedal assembly, correct shifter mounting, correct shift
boot, etc, etc.... Plus you can use it as a guide to figure out the new
cruise wiring.
You'll need to remove the automatic wiring harness completely intact,
there are sections of it that will make fabricating the new manual
harness much easier and it will be a direct plug in to the main harness.
The auto ECU will be just fine as is. The only quirk the automatic ECU
has is slow response of the ISV below 1500 rpm but that actually works
in your favor in this case.
I do have a V8 5 spd tranny here but it needs a rebuild. Shifts perfect,
whines in 3rd/4th/5th. Unfortunately thats the only part I have for a
conversion.
