[V8] ignition caps and wires

Had my car washed the other day and had them clean the engine.  Now they
used the process of washing the engine while it's on.  Once the water/
chemicals got to the ignition caps and wires I could see some sparks coming
off of the top of the caps.  I'm considering doing the ignition wires myself
as a diy yourself.  Are the sparks coming from the caps or the wires ?  Also
is it fine to get the engine washed this way ?
