I believed for a long time that 235/50-16 was the "official" 16-inch size for the Whee!8. But the other day I looked at the fuel filler flap door and it shows 225/50-16.

Scott,
The stock tire (215/60/15) has a standard diameter of 25.2 inches. You
should be looking to match that as much as possible. If you want to check
what alternative sizes will fit your car, go to the tire size calculator at
intendedacceleration.com (on the links page), and compare the diameter to
the stock 215/60/15 tire. Tires slightly larger will cause your speedometer
to indicate slower than you are actually driving and tires smaller in
diameter will cause error to the fast side.
I just put Falken Ziex on my car in 225/60/15. I have to say I really like
them--much better wet grip than I have ever had from a tire, with great
resistance to hydroplaning. They are slightly larger than stock (25.6 in.),
but they work just fine.
If you go to a 16" rim, 235/50/16 is the correct size, but you'll have
difficulty finding a tire in that size. You can also use a 215/55/16, which
is much more prevalent--last time I checked, TireRack had nearly 50 tires in
that size. You may even be able to go to a 22/55/16, since the diameter is
only slightly larger than the 225/60/15's I run and I don't have any
clearance issues.
For a 17" rim, 235/45/17 is the correct size.
Good luck.
