Just a wild guess here -- if the knock sensor is cracked,
it could be shorting out, which might tell the ECU to 
totally retard the timing, causing a lack of power above
1700 rpm.  Unplugging the KS may cause it to send 
_no_ signal to the ECU, so timing is not retarded. 

Aso, TPS = throttle position sensor.
