[V8] Sport/Economy mode question

I was under the impression that little switch in the center console of the V8 autos was a transmission adjustment only, i.e., increase shift points and hold a lower gear longer.  For that reason, I have just been leaving the car in economy and holding my foot to the floor when accelerating.  The reason I ask is it feels like it wants to run more when in sport mode.  Probably my imagination.  Anyway, it is a transmission thing only, right?
