[V8] checking auto trans fluid level

I googled and I wiki'd and I didn't find the info.  My "new" V8 has
the trans dipstick.  What is the proper procedure for checking the
fluid.  I do understand from my research that the trans fluid level is
very sensitive to temperature so I will procede cautiously.

On  some cars, you shift into drive you shift into reverse then into
neutral then check the fluid level.  I also understand that idling in
neutral can be bad for the transmission too.
