It looks like my amp needed more than just the two big caps replaced.
I am not sure which one was really bad but I shotgunned most of the small
eletrolytics that are in a line on the PC board and that fixed it.
I got the amp to fail consistantly on the bench where I could look at it with an
o-scope. I am still a little confused about how this amp works - I expected to
see a + and - supply, but I saw two + supplies. What I think is the power supply
switching signal was very corrupted. Normally it is a nice square wave.
The hardest part of this whole job was getting the glue off the board without
damaging the labels on the caps so I could ID them.
So - if you plan to do this fix, I would recomend (as someone else also did)
that you replace all of the electrolytic caps. This should cost well under $10
per board.
Now I need to find a source for a new volume control since mine is getting
pretty scratchy.
