I think any good audio system should include a subwoofer. It just adds so
much to the fullness of sound, even if you turn the bass down to eliminate
the 'boom'.

Subject: [V8] Bass in car
I figured I would weigh in on this subject. I can understand not wanting
thuddy bass coming from the back of the car, blowing out the ear drums of
those in the back seat, and the loss of space due to amps, boxes, speakers,
etc. I used to think the same way. Now I know that thuddy bass is only for
SPL dudes who fill their cars with sound-deadening material and make them
completely undriveable. I prefer SQ, which means I want the tweets and mids
as well as the subs. It's a harder thing to pull off, although our V8s make
for great platforms. In fact, the guy who installed my stuff got his handed
to him by a V8. Dude had put in two 10" subs in kicker panels up front, if
that tells you anything about the magnitude of work that was put into the
vehicle. Betcha it evened out the thuddy bass coming from the back by
bringing it up front. ;) Of course, the loss of space can be overcome
quite easily. I have several designs in mind to produce maximal sound with
minimal loss of space. It just forces you to be creative. How else do
these nuts put 50+ LCD screens in a Cavalier?
The front doors are a great spot for my 4" speakers, although I would love
to put some 5.25" ones up there, if I can make them look good. The back
deck has been modified to accept real 6"x9" speakers (got rid of the Bose
racks.) I also have two 10" subs; everything is run from a couple of amps.
This really does help round out the sound, as pointed out by the previous
author. As for speakers/amps/headunits breaking right after the warranty
goes out, I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for." This isn't
always the case, but it also helps to have a reputable installer do the
work; companies are more likely to honor lifetime warranties if someone they
trust installs their product. It's saved me having to purchase/fix three
amps (bad fuse holder, blew two Mosfets, and the fan quit working) and one
sub (courtesy of blown amp's fan not working.) Subwoofers may not be
necessary for everyone, but come sit in my car, then go back to yours. I
really believe that yours will have lacking sound, and not just because mine
goes boom. The highs are so loud and clear that I can't keep it at full
volume for more than one song or so.
