IIRC, the front is open, the rear is always Torsen and when a 5spd the
center is Torsen as well. The automatic does its own thing with the
center diff.
I've not found mine to be tail-happy, but maybe I'm not trying/playing
hard enough. I do however always run matched tire sets with good
tread depth and appropriate for weather conditions.
There is no EDL and when you're not applying power, there's no help
from quattro. However, there is very likely going be some drag from
quattro in off-throttle situations that is different from non-driven
wheels.
I haven't driven the automatic much yet, but with snow tires and a
little power application, the thing seemed perfectly sure-footed in
the slippery stuff. My GF probably won't ever know the difference,
which is exactly why I got the auto for her. Her Firebird (FS!) just
won't hack it on those few days that it gets really ugly.
