Good point on the oil cooler lines. Old ages makes the rubber brittle,
and the salt used on the road in the winter in the northern states corrodes
the metal connections. You may destroy the oil cooler trying to free the
hose connections.

As for engine damage, let me state an unusual case -- my car. Twice I lost
oil due to bad hoses/connections (which earned "Bad Puppy" her name),
and my engine survived. See
http://www.audifans.com/twiki/bin/view/Audi/OilCoolerReplacement

After replacing the old cooler and hoses with the generic one, I was down
in NC when one of the hoses slipped off due to a loose clamp. For the third
time, Bad Puppy marked its territory, spill all its oil. On the side of the
road,
I slid the line back on, tightened the clamp, put in a quart of oil, and
drove
another 10 miles to get oil.

The car still lives, being driven by the fiancee's son. The I-5 is one
*tough*
engine.
