[V8] V8 Shifter Play

I'm new to older manual trans on the type 44s.  My recently aquired V8 5-speed's shifter seems quite sloppy.  I have no problems shifting up or down the range, but it just seens like it should/could be tighter.
 
Has anyone had success in replacing busings or linkage rods to improve the "feel"? Are there any known issues about shifter play / miles on the clock?
 
What are your experiences in reducing this play?
