Yes, of course, I agree completely. The "all season" tires offer some sort
of compromise under extremes of each season. The ultimate is a separate set
of tires and wheels for each season....but at a cost that is unrealistic for
most people. Sometimes the cost is simply in the need to store a set of
tires/wheels in the off season.
Several years ago, I organized a high speed time trial at the former Loring
Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine. I did this as a "signature" event for
the newly formed UPnMaine Region, of the Porsche Club of America. (You
wouldn't believe the hassle we got from the "other" region in Maine, by the
way....but another time). Anyway, the event was to be held in late
September, and the time trial itself was about 3 1/2 miles long, with two
straights of one mile, followed by rather sudden and violent manoevers. The
handicapping was rather interesting, but for me, the real treat was going to
be to see the BIG Porsche's humbled by the aged 914 2-litre cars. The event
was to take place over a two day period. At that time of year, in extreme
northern Maine, the weather can go from high summer to deep, rainy fall in a
matter of minutes. And the deal was that the event would take place rain or
shine, with at least ten runs per car guaranteed. It would have been
interesting to see how the hot cars did on the bright sunny Saturday, and
then again on Sunday morning, in the cold, fog and drizzly late September.
Too bad that politics killed the event. It would have been a one-of-a kind,
true high speed trial. And the neat thing would have been to see which
tires could hack both days best!
sigh
