... in my case the windshield in the car had been replaced earlier in its
life.  The tech told me that at that time they did not do a good job of
surface preparation and so the adhesive broke free.  I could agree with what
he was telling me as I could plainly see a fine layer of dust on the surface
where the adhesive had broken free ... 

He assured me that he had done the proper preparation and that I would not
have a problem with the windshield again.  I submitted a claim against the
comprehensive coverage of my insurance, so the cost to me was something like
$100.  If I would have known that the windshield was not really being held
in place by the seal I might well have tried removing it myself and
resealing it.  The cost for doing that would be the cost of the trim ring
and adhesive, but there is a tremendous risk that the windshield will break
...
