[V8] front strut cartrige question

The directions with the KYB front strut cartriges I got for my 90 V8 says a 
spring compressor is not required to replace these struts.  My question is 
how is this possible?  I am at work looking at these things and don't 
readily have my service manual, but having replaced many front struts, I 
don't see how it is possible to replace them without taking them off of the 
car, let alone without using a spring compressor.
