[V8] Foggin on down the road...

Lie in the passenger footwell and look up behind the glovebox. You'll see
a small door hanging open. If you see an intact spring (both end "hooks"
in place) hanging from its anchor spot in the door, you have a broken
plastic bar up in the evaporator box that the spring hooks on. If you find
a spring with one end gone, the spring broke and can be rehooked after a
little needlenose pliers work to bend the last spring winding into another
hook. In the latter circumstance, the spring may be hanging from its
anchoring bar in the evap box. If you find no spring, get a new one from
the dealer for ~$2 (or look on e-bay, where they're offered regularly for
~$2 if your dealer wants $10). If the anchoring bar in the evap box got
cut through by the spring end (which I've found on two cars), you can
create a new anchor by folding a piece of tin over the bar and drilling a
hole in the two ends of the tin. Some folks can do these repairs by just
removing the plastic grille at the back of the glove box housing. I could
only get my short, fat arms and chubby hands in there by taking out the
glove box too.

As an alternative for the winter, take out the rain diverter between the
bottom of the windshield and the firewall, and stick a block of wood or
something in behind the evaporator box to hold the door closed. The
recirculation door normally is open only during A/C operation so the A/C is
cooling air from the cabin that already has been cooled instead of trying
to cool fresh outside air all the time. There actually are two doors that
share a hinged "L" support. One is the interior flap and the other is the
flap for the evaporator box opening to outdoors.
