[V8] TB R&R procedure (for the 1000th time)

I'm pretty much with Dave -- The manual was pretty clear, but only after having everything apart and toying with the components. For me, the most difficult part in the procedure was setting the tension because we needed 4 hands to get it done and it is more complex than standard configurations.

On my manual shifter, throughout, I (we) used no special tools except the cam alignment discs... again to echo Dave S., the job did suck without them. Everything looked perfect, but it wouldn't run right. Called in a favor to a local P/A dealer mechanic who loaned me the discs, and the problem was quickly recified. Get those things -- I submit it's essentially impossible to do the job without 'em... too easy to be a tooth or two off, and overall a PITA.

Also, I did not remove the front bumper, but that left me holding the engine in place with a pry stick on the flywheel teeth in order to tighten the front crank pulley bolt (~8000 Newton Pound MeterFeet). Talk about heart palpitations. The preferable way would have been to use air, for both removal and reinstallation.

Lastly, we had removed the engine to replace the clutch (manual shift car) and RMS. It was a tight fit, and if you don't remove the radiator (and possibly the top support brace), the belt and crank pulley have to come off first... as a side note, I had removed the exhaust and cylinder heads for other work. One should assemble heads and manifolds before dropping unit back in.

Get a friend, a rental car, and a cooler full of beers. Even if you've done 500 various timing belt jobs, this one will take a bit more patience and caution.
