Both heads start as a common casting. The reason both heads have the same
part number cast into them, that part number is the casting part number only, you
will not find it in the ETKA. Common industry practice
Both are machined in exactly the same way. Common industry practice
Each is then assembled to fit the side it is intended for. Since Audi only
services the heads as a sub-assembly and not a bare casting it only follows that
the ETKA will show a different part number for each side. Common industry
practice
If you compare each head while its sitting on a bench you will see that for
each location used for a sensor/bolt/stud/coolant pipe/hose adaptor there will
be a matching machined/threaded/plugged point on the opposite end of the
other head. Even the temp sensor locations are there but sealed with a threaded,
removeable plug. Common industry practice
If you wanted/needed to use a head on a side it wasnt intended for the only
place you might have a problem is moving the coolant adaptor pipe. I suspect
Audi put it in with an interference fit and some strong adhesive.
