Well, possibly he wouldn't, but if I were in Dan's shoes, I might
well be perturbed to learn (after the fact) that my own mail list was
used to promote creation of a new website that could be competitive
with my own site (see below). To inform Dan and solicit his opinion
just helps keep the peace.

I think it's _you_ who's talking apples and oranges. I'm trying to
focus on an "apples and apples" issue, i.e., that there already is a
web site, www.audifans.com, that has been trying (ever so slowly) to
incorporate much of what Mike's hypothetical V8 web site might offer.

True, but have you visited www.audifans.com lately? Dan's site (with
Mark Chang's input) has for some time offered an owner registry and
also posts photos of cars (when listers submit them). IMO, it
wouldn't take much to organize the V8 registry into a page of its
own. Furthermore, how many listers are aware that www.audifans.com
_already_ has the framework/mechanism in place for generating
model-specific FAQs. Here's the URL showing the early stages of a V8
FAQ:
http://www.audi-quattro.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/Audi/V8. All it takes
is more lister input to expand it.
It seems to me that a volunteer who would be willing to create an
independent V8 site might also consider offering to help create a
unified (and expanded) V8 section within the audifans site. At least
that alternative seems worth exploring.
