Perhaps. But the comparison that I used was for an A6 4.2 litre that would
have been purchased 32 months ago, when I bought my V8. At that time, there
were very, very few 4.2 litre A6's anywhere, and in point of fact, I am not
sure that I had even sure that they were available at all, although I did
consider the possibity of buying one while I was shopping for my V8.
Another problem with the A6 V8 is that independent work on those cars is
problematical. I know of two independent who have bought the latest computer
programs to enable them to work on the car, and have found everything to be
100%....except for not being able to reset service minders. Seems as though
the manufacturers "forget" to publish that little piece of data when the cds
are sold to Bentley, or whomever publishes these electronic manuals. BMW
has been a BIG culprit in the "proprietary" service information game, but
Audi is also a significant player in keeping what they know a secret from
everyone.
My V8 is precisely 'there' right now. 90,000 miles and I am doing all the
things that normally wear out at that point. Control arms, brake discs,
hydraulic pump, and some other little rubber gizzies. The mechanic feels
that the car will be "right" for another significant amount of mileage.
Certainly it would appear that the major components, once screwed back
together finally, will not wear out for at least three years with my use,
and perhaps more.
It would seem to be the appropriate time to sell the car and to move on.
So, sometime in this new year, I may in deed sell it. But not for another
high performance sedan. The ONLY reason that I can think of selling this
car at all, would be to make room in the garage for something that I haven't
had before...one of those, "Gee, I ALWAYS wanted one of those" cars.
Assuming that the residual value of this car will be around $5-7000 at
100,000 miles, I will have spent around $14,000 for the car, including
purchase and maintenance over a three and a half year period, and around
40,000 miles. Pretty expensive transportation per mile, but on a "bang for
the buck" basis, there are few vehicles that can compare with it, if any.
At the end of the day, I will likely keep the car in service for another
three years. At that time, what might happen is that I will get an
appraisal from the friendly Audi dealer, and then donate the car to the
transportation museum and take the deduction. That arithmetic might well
prove to be a much more interesting number once this car has, say, 150,000
on the clock.
Also, your point about alternative transportation is extremely on point. My
wife has a car, I have a truck, plus I also have a 200 20Valve Avant that
will be road ready in June, so being without the V8 now is no issue for me.
Too, if you consider the V8's age, and thus the depreciated value of the car
from a licensing and taxing standpoint, alternative, or "beater"
transportation is more readily affordable, than if $25,000 or more were tied
up in one car.

Knowledge about the procedure for a repair is just as important than the
corect tool. V8 at AudiFans supplied the knowledge I needed. I got my first
copy of the Family Album and the V8 Repair Manual from Audi on Microfiche. I
tore the car apart replacing all seals, gaskets and hoses that I could do
without removing the heads. I replaced all the fluids, checked all CVJs and
brake components. I made the V8 roadable to the point I had complete
confidence that I would not be inconvieienced. Well, the Trans went south 2
months after I put it on the road. I became addicted to this car in the 3
months that I was reconditioning and driving it.
