I have had a fascination about a V8 Avant for years.
I think I am cured now, though. Last spring I bought a '91 200 20valve
Avant as a restoration/rejuvenation project. I bought the car on eBay.
The car was delivered to my wrench's place by me....I drove it back to Maine
from Washington on its maiden voyage. We have had some mechanical issues to
correct....rear brakes, one universal in the driveline and a few other
relatively minor glitches. The nose on the car needs to have the left front
fender reset (deer encounter about 50k ago by the records), and many of
those lousy little chrome trim pieces that Audi so loved on the Type 44 cars
need replacing, along with the little plastic gizzies that hold them on.
Lastly, all the little bitty dings accumulated in around 140k need to be
smoothed over and new Panther Black applied.
This car has a chip, and MAN! What a chip. The boost indicator in the dash
shows 2.4 bar, and I believe it. Given a bit more room, I think it would
show 2.7 bar as that is what I saw on the virgin voyage up I-95 in the
middle of the night. The car was pullling like a....like a.....ah....ahem!
A 4.2 V8.
Getting closer to decision time....this Avant could be a good candidate for
a V8 front clip....
for now, I am cured of my need for a V8 Avant.
Roger
....at least until I convince myself that what I REALLY, REALLY want is a
late S6 Avant....that is.....
