[V8] Hydraulic Valve Lifters

After a TB mishap resulting in a few bent valves, I decided to rebuild both
heads myself (thought it would be a good experience). I had no problem with
the left head, but for some reason, on the right side some of the valves
wouldn't close completely. I turned over the cams by hand a few turns, and
that helped, but one intake valve still won't completely close. I removed
that cam and drained some oil from that lifter & reassembled it, but that
made no difference.

Is there a trick to bleeding these off to shorten them to allow the valves
to fully seat? Or will they take care of themselves as long as I make sure
they won't hit the piston? I can understand how they pump up to take up
valve clearance, but I can't seem to grasp how they can ever bleed off.

Thanks for any advice. This "learning experience" has taken far longer than
I imagined and I'm anxious to get it back on the road.
