[V8] Crankshaft seal removal?

You can either spend many hundreds of dollars on the specialized V8 only tools,
or you can try to dig them out and risk damage to the sealing surfaces using
generic tools, OR you can remove the front cover and lower oil pan and use
ordinary tools to R&R the seals. I did this method. The front cover gasket and
pan gasket is typical Audi expensive but overall this was the cheapest for me
with the benefit of all new gaskets.
Important saftey note: there are bolts that go up through the upper oil sump
into the front cover. Be sure you get them all out or you will cause expensive
damage. When you remove the cover, part of the upper sump gasket will be
exposed. If this breaks then you will also have to remove the upper sump and
replace that gasket. That in turn means dropping the sub-frame and the suck
factor for this job just went up by 5 points.
