[V8] Help, no start v8

Alright,
My guess is this - the bendix is shot - why? Because if flywheel teeth
are missing the car won't run right. The whirring sound is what I heard
when my bendix was "internally" shot. The starter is actually spinning
and if you test it out of the car it will seem fine but when you put the
bendix under load it won't turn the motor. The starters themselves are
extreamly rugged, needle bearings in both ends, planetary reduction, beefy
all around - the bendix on the other hand is the same one used in a 1.8
(and probably others) VW motor, with the big exeption that it is an exact
mirror image of the V8 so it's unusable. Anyway, I cut my bendix cover
off and realized that the "rollers" were worn - I cut 6 new pieces of 1/4"
hardened drill rod, welded the cover back on and - voila. Been going
without a hitch for 6mo. and 15K mi. Beats a $250 starter to pieces.
Good luck,
Jason
