[V8] car posessed?

FWIW, my car displayed precisely the same symptoms a few weeks ago. Local generator shop rebuilt the alt for $100 and all was again right with the world. 

Expect about an hour to remove it. No biggie. Make room by unbolting the oil cooler. An extra hand might help for reinstalling.

Voltage regulator brushes are worn out and making intermittant 
contact...replace the voltage regulator.
