Hi Dave, You know I used to work as a commercial refrigeration tech and I cannot recall for the life of me how much vacuum we used to put on a system. It also depends a great deal on if the system got any moisture in it. If there was no leaking it wouldn't be that critical just to convert from R-12 to R-134 because they're somewhat compatible, although different evaporation points so you still want to get as much of the old stuff out as possible. Once a system is losing pressure you can get moisture in which is a BIG NO NO in a.c. or refrigeration. So unless there was evidence of a leak the amount of vacuum wouldn't be so critical as much as making sure the vacuum is held by the system. That way you aren't wizzing away all your new refrigerant. Not a huge deal in automotive a.c. but we still need to be nice to our planet. If you would like to know some exact figures let me know and I'll dig it up for you. Good Luck, Bill p.s. I'll be gone for about a week so be patient
