[V8] Tranny Fluid check

So I haven't picked up a bentley manual yet, but wanted to do the tranny
fluid change this weekend, thought I'd check the fluid level, and popped
that little cap off the end of the tube right by the master cylinder
expecting it to be a dipstick, but it's just that, a cap.  So my question is
how does one verify how full the tranny is, and how much / what type of
fluid does it take.
