[V8] KILLER CC LINKAGE ROD
Joe Fox
2-foxes at comcast.net
Mon Mar 1 02:34:29 EST 2004
Back on the soapbox again...
When (not if) the plastic grommet at the actuator end of the cruise control
linkage fails, the rod will fall against the top of the engine and prevent
throttle from closing! REMOVE THE KILLER LINKAGE ROD--It causes wide-open
throttle episodes inducing transmission clutch failures OR WORSE!
If you must have cruise control, replace the rod with a flexible chain or
cable. Rigid linkage is unnecessary for this application because the CC
diaphragm need only pull the throttle valve open, not push it closed; a
spring closes the throttle.

Pete,
Steve did an excellent write-up last September (our archives no longer
go back that far, so I have pasted his response below).
Sounds like you have a vacuum leak to me.
Good luck in troubleshooting.
Cheers,
- Jeremy
BTW, gas tank 'woosh' sounds normal to me, but it's been a while since I
have pumped my own gas (Oregon law, one of very few States here that has
this law)
-----------------
On every Audi other than the V8 I've been able to fix the CC with simple
measures ... adjusting the pedal switches or repairing vacuum leaks ...
that's still the first place to start IMO. You only have one switch on
the automatic ... on the brake pedal. Make sure that the switch
protrudes enough so that the pad that senses the pedal is fully
depressed against the switch body when the pedal is released.
I've seen problems with integrity of the vacuum system that drives the
actuator. If you pull the vacuum line from the pump and apply a vacuum
there you should observe the throttle actuator motor get pulled in. If
you don't have a vacuum pump you can depress the actuator motor and then
pinch off the end that attaches to the pump and the actuator should
remain in position when released. If you do not find this to be the
case ... check to see that the pedal switch isn't leaking (IME a sign of
a need for
adjustment) or look for a broken "T" fitting in the system near the CC
actuator. Of course, check that the linkage rod is attached to the
throttle body linkage while you are doing this. Unfortunately most of
this stuff is buried behind the engine on the left side.
There is another bizarre possibility which you may want to investigate
... the CC uses the "hot" side of the brake light circuit to get its
ground. It is a fail safe measure, that way when the brake lights come
on the CC is guaranteed to lose its ground. If you lose all your brake
lights the CC will stop working too ... check to make sure that the
brake lights are functional.
One other peculiarity of the automatics is that the CC power is enabled
by the tranny computer, so if you have any tranny codes it may disable
the CC ... read out tranny codes and get them cleared.
Now ... to what I found on my car ... None of the simple stuff solved it
so I followed the troubleshooting guide in the book. I found the ON/OFF
switch was bad ... I replaced it and the car now has CC. Given your
situation, if you suspect that the problem is due to a bad switch or the
tranny ECU you might want to install a temporary fix by supplying a
direct switched power connection to the Cruise Control system. I do not
think there is a big risk to doing this ... I drive around with the CC
on most all of the time anyway ... If you want help in figuring this out
get back to me and I'll get the wiring diagram out and figure something
out ...
I've never had a situation where the vacuum actuator, vacuum pump or CC
controller has been the cause of a failure ...
I hope you have a very safe trip out and back ...
Steve Buchholz

Subject: [V8] Gearbox/cruisecontrol/air recirc problem
Hello
Have had a problem for a while with the cruise control not working, this
packed up the same time as the air con recirculator button (which now
doesn't seem to do anything)
I seem to remember someone else having similar problems a while back
(possibly relating to the auto transmision) if this jogs any memorys I'd
be grateful for any feed back.
My transmision did throw a selection wobbly about 20k ago but seems to
have sorted itself out.
One last question, is it normal for a vacuum to form in the fuel tank
when running low on petrol? Often get a wooshing sound when I undo the
cap.
Thanks for reading

Listers,
I bought a Stebro exhaust & got a chance to install
it yesterday,
my 1st impressions is that I don't like it. It's
rather weird sounding sounds like I have an exhaust
leak,
maybe I need to re tighten the clamps again but I
tightend them up good.
Well I'll keep it on for a few weeks & see how I like
it if I don't it's going to be For Sale. Anyone want
it if I don't like it?
Thanks
Ron

Dave, I'm surprised at you! On a 3.6 car the full throttle switch in the
TPS tells the motronic to switch to open loop operation.

Ok... so we finally got a couple of nice days in a row and I got my pads
swapped around, recharged the battery and fired up the V8... It, as usual,
fired
immediately and rolled along at 1100rpm or so warming up. I was rather
ticked
to see that the pad warning lights didn't go off... I guess I have to pull
the
wheels and recheck the splices... after I bleed everything again.
But... I tapped the throttle and it swung up to redline and stuck! Pulling
back on the pedal made no difference so I shut it down. Fiddled with the
pedal
a bit and started it again - right up to redline again.
HELP!?
It's been sitting for a couple of months waiting to get the roters and pads
swapped. My suspicion is mechanical not electrical. Is there a common
failure?
Thankfully this was in the driveway, not on some city street!

I think you are right, most likely mechanical. There was a cruise
control recall because of this very issue. Some that actually had the
recall performed many moons ago are experiencing failures again.
Pop the air filter cover off and the air box at the back of the air
intake manifold. There you will see where the accelerator cable meets
the throttle linkage and the cruise control linkage. There you will
most likely see the problem (bent linkage, worn nylon bushing, etc)
Glad you discovered this on your driveway and not the freeway...
Good luck,
- Jeremy

Corrosion, binding or critters, either way, remove the air intake
housing, the air filter, remove the two (I think they're 10mm) bolts that
hold the air filter box in, remove that, pull up on the black spark plug
wire harness (it has clips underneath on both ends) and move it out of
the way. Under that there will be a plate held in with three torx screws
(I think they're T25's), remove that. Then you'll be able to get a good
look at the cable, spring, accelerator and look for any physical binding,
nests etc. If clear, spray the area with lots of your favorite lube,
cycle throttle back and forth and it should take care of the problem.
If it is the cruise control linkage, just remove the damn thing. I can
count on the fingers of one hand how many times I've used the cruise
control. I had the thing bind on V8Q #2 while #1 son was driving it on
the highway, luckily he just killed it and pulled over. I went out to
assist, and there's nothing more fun than popping off that damn CC rod on
a 100 degree day with a hot engine. The recall had been done, but
evidently when the transmission was later changed they must have
forgotten to disconnect it and bent the rod and actuator holder a bit.

What, huh? I sometimes use the cruise control on my 3-mile "commute"
to/from work. ;-)
Ed
Colorado Springs ... where a 3-mile "commute" can take 30 minutes, which of
course would not be when I use the cruise control.

John,
Had the same problem when I first got the V8. The problem was the rod where
the cruise control connected to the throttle. Got the parts for the Recall
for this from the Audi dealer here and problem fixed. Also fixed the
jerking when decelerating and the surging I was experiencing.
Hope this helps,
Kyle
