[V8] FW: Audi accident in Portugal

... wasn't originally going to reply ... in fact I didn't even look at the
site until I saw the follow on posts ... 

It certainly looked as though the steering wheel had an airbag.  Remember
though that such airbags only provide value on frontal impacts ... in this
situation it was clear that the vehicle broadsided the tree.  One of the
things I learned as a kid learning to drive was that a tree is one of the
worst things to run into ... they are quite resilient.  I would argue that
you'd be hard pressed to find any modern vehicle that would fare any better
in this serious an accident ... that said, from the looks of the pictures it
did appear that the driver's seat area was not crumpled very seriously, and
perhaps a driver might have survived this accident.  It is pretty clear that
if there was anyone else in the vehicle they had little to no chance ...
