All V8s have a trans cooler built into the drivers side radiator tank...and
that includes all manual trans cars too!
4.2 cars have an additional cooler with fan mounted outboard of the drivers
side frame rail but they still use the radiator cooler to help maintain a
stable temp.
The cooler is an open tube design with coolant flowing thru the center and
outer sections. Its entirely possible for one of these coolers to fail and get
trans fluid in the coolant but you would also have the tattle tale signs of
trans fluid contamination too unless the failure point is so tiny its only
leaking under the high pressure of the trans pump.
