[V8] 4.2 Engine and tranny woes

Well fellow audifans, my father's 4.2 isn't looking
good. Upon further inspection of the block, if you
recall it had oil in the coolant and vice versa and
has some serious corrosion at the water jackets and
every oil seal on the motor is leaking. We decided to
pull the motor last night so we could replace every
seal on the motor. The car had low miles when we got
it, and I suspect it sat for a while drying all of the
seals out. Either that or the mileage is not correct,
checked out on carfax.
Anyway, when we got the block out, I noticed tranny
fluid laying in the bellhousing, not good. I suspect
there is a seal at the torque converter, not sure how
easy it is to replace. Anyone BTDT? Is this a sign
of a tranny on its way out? Car now has 110k miles.
Transmission has been a little rough in the past but
not too bad. Fluid was changed regularly. There were
a few occasions when the car wouldn't go into gear in
really cold weather over the winter, took some
coaxing. By the way, have I mentioned how much I hate
slushboxes? The other v8 in my family died a few
months ago from a bad slushbox, again, not worth
fixing, especially a 3.6 '90 v8.
At this point we are trying to decide what to do. If
the tranny needs rebuilt, we're not going to fix it,
in which case, the engine will be fixed and dropped
into my 5spd. Sounds good to me, but I'd rather fix
the car as my father would hate to see it go.
Anyone have any experience with leaking tranny fluid
at the torque converter? Any good prices out there on
rebuilt trannys? Any help would be greatly
appriciated. My garage is becoming a v8 graveyard.
Thanks.
