I think the basic design of the amp is OK - they just got a bad load of caps and
so only recalled the affected units. Amps built before or after should be just
fine. The one thing I did not like was the gauze like sound deadener inside the
amp. That looked like a fire hazard to me - but maybe it does not burn. I didn't
try to light it. If the factory rebuilt units still have that stuff in them then
they don't think it is a problem either.

Failing capacitors are a common problem here for us. It is a common sight for a
burn-in board to actually catch on fire because a tantalum cap burned up.
These boards are in an oven that can be up to 125C so they have a shortened life
expectancy.
There is just as much risk of your ECU catching on fire as a speaker amp I would
think.

When my amp went bad, it started to sort of screech and hammer the speaker. The
main power caps were fine (although I replaced them) but the problem was the
lone tantalum cap. I replaced that one and all has been well - unless it somehow
caused my upper radiator hose and power steering hose to start leaking. Hmmmm.
