I've been researching and tracing an oil leak and was going to bring it to a
shop next week, suspicion of RMS, but because of the archives on this list I
think I have found the answer.

Roger's "plugs at the end of the two huge high pressure oil journals on the
cyl heads".

The behaviour of my oil leak meets with this explanation. Mine leaks only
when the engine is cold. Once the heads and block are thoroughly heated (~20
minutes of driving time), no leaking, and stays that way for the day. My
leak is directly proportional to oil pressure. If I run the engine at high
revs, open the flood gates. If I keep the revs no more than ~2000 until the
engine warms, no leak to speak of.

Winter time = colder engine = more time spent leaking.

A few spoons of oil in the right place can create a smoking disaster. "Hey
your car's on fire"

I fashioned two thin alum drip shields, to protect the header exits, going
into one main shield inserted over the cross pipe, to drain these drips onto
the pavement not the exhaust.

At the end of a drive the drip of oil collected amounts to about the size of
a silver dollar (or loonie).

If anyone knows what these plugs are made up of,( seals etc.) I'd like to
know more about them.
