I'll agree on the sadistic part.

Your problem sounds exactly like the speed sensors. There are two of them on 
the drivers side of the engine. The are held in by two 10mm head screws. The 
connectors are under the drivers side distributor. It's easiest if you 
remove it. The replacements are about $170 each. However, I've recently 
found that the ones for a 5000-or your S6 for that matter-function exactly 
the same as the V8. For that matter, both on the V8 are functionally exactly 
the same. The ones for the 5000 are about $112 on bimmerzone.com, you might 
find them elsewhere for a little cheaper. Th only difference in them is the 
length of wire before the plug. On the V8, it's about 10", on the 5000, 
about 2 feet. I'd just make a couple of nice loops and zip-tie them.
