[V8] New Battery - Battery Warning Indicator Remains On

Hi,

I have a brand new battery installed in my 90 V8Q. The battery warning 
indicator is on in the dash. How can I tell if the battery is being charged 
or not? I have a digital multimeter but have the impression that I cannot 
just disconnect one of the battery terminals and just put it in line after 
the car is running. Is there some other place that I could instrument to 
tell? It seems a major oversight not to have an ammeter considering there is 
an oil temperature gauge in addition to an oil pressure gauge.
