[V8] What a Scam - V8 Electric Supercharger

I have to admit I thought about this once too.

The problem:

People much smarter than me calculated that for a Ford SHO V6 (the old one with
the yamaha heads - and about 3.0L) the turbo requires the equivilent of 23
horsepower.
That gives you an idea how much wasted power is going down the exhaust pipe.
It also says that the alternator would have to provide adaquate power to drive a
blower + conversion (mechanical) losses.

As I recall, our alternators are right about 100 AMP - but that is peak load.
You would be asking for trouble to run it at more than 50% load for any length
of time.

1 horse power = 745 watts
watts = amps X volts (for this purpose anyway)

so 100 * 13.2 = 1320 watts or 1.7 horse power peak.

Even at an un-sustainable 100 amps and neglecting the vehicle electrical load,
there is not much power there.
If you instead only rely on the blower for WOT boost (like nitrous) you will be
putting loads on the battery similar to the starter which will quickly destroy
an ordinary battery - and even then you only get about 5 available horsepower.

Not worth the effort IMHO.

Just as a fun point of reference, I built a battery charger for my camp trailer
out of a 6 HP lawn mower engine and a 40 amp alternator. When the battery is
very discharged it is all the motor can do at full throttle to drive the
alternator and it theoretically is only 0.7 HP worth of load.
The motor drives the alt at a little over a 1:1 ratio.
