I've donated a few cars to charities and have done it without using an 
appraiser. I just took a look at the used car books, did some internet 
comparisons of similar cars and took that as the value of the car. There were 
differences in some of the values that I pulled, but I just took an average 
of the values that I found. Don't know if that is exactly the way you're 
supposed to determine the value, but both donations were done that way a few 
years ago and I haven't heard squat from the IRS.
