I had an odd situation a few years back where the motor was often hard to start
on the first try, but started right up on the second try. I began to notice that
it would sometimes start on the first try just as I released the key. I pulled
the fuel pump relay to inspect - and did not really see anything wrong, but I
adjusted the contacts a tad and have not had that problem since. I think the
relay was binding up somehow.
It turns out that the fuel pump supplies +12v to both the fuel pump and the
ignition coils - but through seperate contacts. It would be possible for one to
work but not the other.

Just to complicate that whole issue, I also had those bosch +4 plugs in there -
and they got wet and fouled real easy. I went back to OEM plugs.

Also, if your MPG sucks and you know all the usual tune up parts are OK, you may
want to check the fuel pressure. Too much or too little pressure can cause this.
