Who's got the best writeup on fixing/repairing the V8 cluster? I've got
mine out to replace some bulbs, and want to see what else I should
check.

... as do both of mine ... but I've had and seen enough Audis to know
that it is a common malady. As others have pointed out it is most
likely due to the sender in the tank. On older cars the diagnostic was
to connect a certain valued fixed resistor in place of the fuel tank
sender to see what the gauge reads. On the V8 the instrument cluster
has a diagnostic mode that creates a standard reading on the gauges ...
I *think* the fuel gauge is part of this mode. When the diagnostic is
enabled the IC forces the gauges t read in standard locations, you
should be able to run this to see if it is the gauge.

Another data point ... in all of my V8 IC flakiness experience I've
never found an issue with the reading of the fuel gauge ...

Mine will register above the 20 on a complete fill.
