Doing the TB, everything came apart OK without too much cussing except some
of the torx screws on the water pump. Two broke off, one is stripped.
I plan to hammer (ouch!) something into the stripped one and see if I can
persuade it to come out with a hand impact driver. Any suggestions on
removing the broken studs after the water pump is out?
They're out.
For the stripped one, I carefully centerpunched it, and drilled
progressively larger until I was able to tap the head off the fastener.
This let me remove the water pump, leaving the three bad studs protruding.
A vice grip on the remains of the drilled one took it right out. Note that
I did not have to or want to drill all the way through.
#2 also came right out - vice grip, plus a little back and forth, and it
loosened right up and came out.
#3 was tougher. It did NOT want to loosen with the vice grips. Fortunately,
the aluminum block casting in the area was fairly thin, so I applied heat
with a bernz-o-matic, being careful not to melt any of the plastic bits in
the area.
Two or three tries with that broke the stud loose, and patience was
rewarded when it came out intact.
Now I can start putting this thing back together!!!!
